Arrogance

theemotionmachine:

It’s not arrogant if you think you’re smarter or more capable than someone in a certain situation. Sometimes you are. However, it is arrogant if you think you are, but you’re really not.

Caveat: it IS arrogant if you being smarter or more capable than someone in a certain situation causes you to expect or demand more than is fair in said situation.

Augusten Burroughs is done writing about himself. And for the best-selling memoirist who mined his traumatic, stranger-than-fiction life for six best-selling books, including 2002’s “Running with Scissors,” that’s a big deal. He filled The Daily in on his new self-help book.

“In a way, I feel like my whole career has been leading up to writing this,” Burroughs said of “This Is How.” “Because I’ve gone through so much stuff and turned out okay. As a child, I never had the benefit of adults in my life who I could go to and ask for guidance. I had to solve all my own problems. And there’s no reason to think that the way I personally overcame incredible trauma is just a freak result and won’t work for other people.”

Super, super excited about this book.
Augusten is my favorite author.

I LOVE THIS MAN

Reading the article actually makes me want to read that book, and I loathe self help books. But with wisdom like this, it feels like a perfect match for me:

“It is not true that you can do anything you set your mind to. It is a lie that with hard work and perseverance, you can achieve your dream.”
